《飞鸟集》中表现了深层的精神追求—爱与和谐的宇宙终极原则或神，描绘自然万物的灵（神）性相通，有机一体，展现人与自然、爱与神的亲密无间、交互融溶，歌赞生命的自由、平等、博爱—从而生成了丰富隽永的人生哲理。在这里神、自然、人与爱的界限已经模糊不清了，诗人追求人与神的合一、爱与神的关系、以及神与自然的统一，渴望与神“完全合一的形象显现”，也就是要达到有限生命与无限生命的统一，就是要达到人的最高的理想境界。
为此，诗中揭示，人必须完善自己的人格，要在“思想中摒除虚伪”，要驱走心中“一切的丑恶”，并且只能在“爱”中，在“爱的服务”中与神结合。诗人在诗篇中表达了人生的奉献与人生意义的追求，使诗篇充满着生机。
由于诗人的生命哲学并不完善，在有限的生命与无限的生命最终统一问题上，显得无能为力，只好用道德的自我完善和“泛爱论”来求得统一，求得人生的圆满，求得社会理想的实现。

《飞鸟集》创作于年，初版于年完成。《飞鸟集》其中的一部分由诗人译自自己的孟加拉文格言诗集《碎玉集》（）。
另外一部分则是诗人年造访日本时的即兴英文诗作。诗人在日本居留三月有余，不断有淑女求其题写扇面或纪念册。诗人曾经盛赞日本俳句的简洁，他的《飞鸟集》显然受到了这种诗体的影响。
